The old saying "they don't make them like they used to" stands true with what's happening in the automotive industry today, and for once that's a good thing! According to J.D. Power's 2017 U.S. Initial Quality Study, new-car quality is at an all-time high. But what's even more interesting than the improved quality is which auto brands are leading the charge this year -- there was quite a shakeup in the rankings. Here's a look at how the study works and which brands swapped top spots.J.D. Power's 2017 IQS study is based on responses from roughly 80,000 vehicle purchasers and lessees of new 2017 model-year vehicles; after 90 days of ownership, those consumers were bombarded with a 233-question survey designed to provide insight into problems and issues with new products. And this year the survey found that automakers were offering more high-quality cars than ever before. "Automotive manufacturers are responding to consumer feedback and producing vehicles of the highest quality," said Dave Sargent, vice president, global automotive, at J.D. Power, in a press release. "The industry has improved significantly in each of the past three years. Today's vehicles have more things that could go wrong but fewer things that actually do go wrong."Continue reading
I came across a pair of Common Grackle Babies in my yard while mowing. I think they are Common Grackles, but I'm not 100% sure. Please correct me if I am wrong. I'm not sure where the nest is located. They don't look old enough to be out of the nest yet. We haven't had any high winds lately so I'm not sure what's going on.
When I approached them to photograph, they would open their mouth wanting to be fed. I didn't mow near them and when I checked on them later, I couldn't find them. They may have gone into my neighbor's yard.

Common Grackle Facts
The breeding habitat is open and semi-open areas across North America east of the Rocky Mountains. The nest is a well-concealed cup in dense trees (particularly pine) or shrubs, usually near water; sometimes, the common grackle will nest in cavities or in man-made structures. It often nests in colonies, some being quite large. Bird houses are also a suitable nesting site. There are four to seven eggs.
Unlike many birds, the grackle benefits from the expansion of human populations due to its resourceful and opportunistic nature. Common grackles are considered a serious threat to crops by some, and notoriously difficult to exterminate and usually require the use of hawks or similar large birds of prey.

Chronic stress is detrimental to health. Our modern lifestyle is fast paced and dynamic. It can be hard for our bodies to keep up. Stress is one of the root causes of many health concerns. The naturopathic doctors at Annex Naturopathic Clinic assess their patient's stress and make connections to how it may be affecting other areas of their health. Stress Response - Stage 1 Let's begin by understanding the stress response. First we must acknowledge that the human body and its physiology has not changed significantly from that of our ancestors 50 000 years ago. However, the environment that humans live today is drastically different from hunter-gatherers. To ensure the survival of our species, upon encountering a threat- let's say a bear- our fight or flight response creates a hormone cascade- including adrenaline- that would enable out body to fight the bear or run away as quickly as possible. This initial response is called the alarm stage.
Stress Response - Stage 2 The second stage of the stress response is the resistance phase. The body responds to the inflammatory environment created by the alarm stage . At this point, the brain signals to the adrenal glands to increase the production and release of cortisol. Cortisol, a hormone with anti-inflammatory properties (amongst many other actions), acts to quiet the immune response. Once a certain amount of cortisol is reached in the blood stream, the brain stops singling the adrenal glands to respond, and cortisol production is normalized.
Stress Response - The Problem The stress response outlined above is protective and beneficial if activated sporadically. The problem that we encounter is modern society is that our stress response doesn't know the difference between encountering a bear and being in a high stress work environment. Deadlines at work, traffic, finances, relationships, overextending ourselves socially, and information overload via technology are repeated and chronic stressors that leave the stress hormone cascades turned on and levels of cortisol and adrenaline higher than appropriate.
Our bodies are only meant to see surges in these hormones in fleeting glances. When we are exposed to repeated stressors, too close together our hormones become out of balance (notably, chronically elevated cortisol) and negative health outcomes ensue including altered circadian rhythm, elevated blood sugar, gastrointestinal concerns and altered immune response. Naturopathic doctors are able assess stress and its effects through specialized testing and comprehensive intake and offer solutions that can make the body more resilient in the face of modern living. If you're curious to learn more about this subject or would like to consult with one of our NDs feel free to book a visit or contact us. Artificial intelligence (AI) is all the rage recently. Headlines touting the numerous advances in a variety of fields and debates about how we will best serve our robot overlords are pervasive. It seems like much investor focus is on the area of self-driving cars lately, and why not? The prospect of fewer accidents, saved lives, and reduced traffic congestion are not only appealing, they would improve our quality of life.NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) gets some of that press, and much is centered on the company's progress and partnerships in autonomous driving. But the graphics processing guru is making AI advances in a vast array of areas, and one getting the least amount of attention is the area of medicine.NVIDIA DGX-1 AI Supercomputer in a box.
